La Herradura is a small town belonging to Almuñecar, with no more than 4000 inhabitants. It is situated around a bay on the southern coastline of Granada province. On the eastern side of town is the famous Punta de la Mona (a luxury residential area with fantastic views to the bay), Almuñecar the sea, and the Marina. On the western side is Cerro Gordo, declared a natural park in the 80's due to the fauna and vegetation interest. La Herradura is on the border of Malaga province, very close to Maro and Nerja.
From Cerro Gordo to Maro, visitors will enjoy not only the rare vegetation and impressive landscapes, but also the most beautiful and clearest beaches of the area with names such as El Cañuelo, Cantarrijan(nudist beach), El Molino de Papel and Acantilados de Maro(Cliffs of Maro). Most of these beaches are dotted with Chiringuitos (typical spanish restaurants on the beach) serving fresh, spanish and international food. During summer nights, some of these places offer live music until late night. To preserve the natural nature of these beaches, most are not accessible by car, in order to protect the environment. For that reason La Junta de Andalucia (Andalusian government) offers a shuttle service (low cost) at day time for those who want to enjoy these beaches during the summer time.
Why visit? La Herradura offers quality of life; it is not a conventional tourist destination. This is the right place to relax and enjoy beautiful beaches surrounded by the mountains. It is also only 4 km. from the motorway giving swift access to neighbouring towns such as Nerja and Almuñecar, and also the cities of Granada and Málaga. It has its own marina (named “Marina del Este”), the right spot to practice a wide range of watersports.
What is on ? Watersports, fishing, diving, paragliding, hiking, trekking, horseriding and adventure sports. Children's activities in the sea like sailing or diving courses. Almuñecar (only 5 km. away) offers an Aquarium, a Water Park, a Bird Park (“Loro Sexi”), etc. And no less important is that La Herradura is just over an hour away from the ski resort of Sierra Nevada!
Night life! As said before La Herradura is a small and quiet place but it has some pubs with a nice ambience opening till late at night. Some of them offer live music on weekends.
